The report demonstrates the Society’s recent achievements and vision to fulfil its commitment to create a lasting, positive impact on society in the UK, focusing on the key priority areas of Customers, People, Community and the Environment.

“Our report this year highlights the progress we have made as an organisation and demonstrates our continued commitment to doing the right thing for our members, colleagues, local communities and the environment.

Society Matters 2017 key achievements:

Customers

  • 0.28% better average savings rate than the rest of the market average in 2017, benefiting 2.7m customers who chose to save with us
     
  • Helped homeowners by providing 36,064 mortgages (2016: 27,229), including 7,011 (2016: 6,398) to first-time buyers
     
  • 39,304 customers benefited from adapted support based on their vulnerable circumstances

Community

  • £1.5 million contributed to local communities through fundraising, direct donations and volunteering hours
     
  • Helped 54 homeless young people into a home of their own through our charity partnership with End Youth Homelessness
     
  • Provided 7,267 pupils with financial literacy support through our Money Minds programme

People

  • Awarded 28th place in the UK’s Best Large Workplaces ranking, based on colleague feedback and an assessment of our colleague programmes
     
  • 1,000 colleagues attended diversity and inclusion workshops
     
  • Welcomed 24 apprentices onto our award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which offers young people a permanent role on the same terms and conditions as other colleagues as well as the chance to complete relevant professional qualifications

Environment

  • 19% carbon footprint reduction compared to 2016 (25% compared to our baseline year of 2012)
     
  • CarbonNeutral® status maintained in 2017
